Summary
Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 modernised European machinery law for connected, autonomous, and AI-enabled machinery. It replaced the older Machinery Directive and addressed risks created when software or machine learning systems influence physical movement. The regulation is relevant to embodied AI because machines with self-evolving or autonomous behaviour must be assessed for safety risks, including risks arising from software updates or system drift. It also supports human-robot collaboration safeguards, including physical safety overrides that remain available independently of the AI controller.
