Japan — Establishment of the Japan AI Safety Institute

Summary

Japan established the Japan AI Safety Institute in February 2024 to coordinate national work on AI safety evaluation. The institute aligned Japan’s approach with the emerging international network of AI safety institutes, including counterparts in the United States and United Kingdom. Its priorities included technical evaluation of foundation models, cyber-attack defence, prevention of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear risks, and countering automated disinformation. The institute represented a move from high-level G7 principles toward operational testing and safety infrastructure.
